Jörg Süßenbach, head of the music devision at Goethe Institute Germany, invited me to give a talk on on the relationship between sound and visuals on 28 November 2015 for a congregation of international Goethe Institute members in Darmstadt.
The delegation will be in Darmstadt to attend the cresc Biennale 2015 which is focused on the topic of Images of Sound.

On 20 November 2015 I will be giving a presentation at the Münster School of Design of Münster University of Applied Sciences on the historical development of my discipline Visual Music and will be focusing on the significance of the close interrelation between sound and images. I initiated the Visual Music major concentration at the Institute of Music and Media (IMM) of the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media and am also the founder and editor-in-chief of the important Visual Music Archive online forum.
Prof. Nina Juric and Prof. Gregor Kuschmirz are hosting the event, both alumni of the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg who majored in Motion Design, a concentration I have been responsible for since 1998.

Listening attentively
November 2015

On 11 November 2015, as part of the annual Intra Muros week at the Peter Behrens School of Arts in the Architecture department of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, I will give a lecture on attentive listening. In my workshop I will juxtapose the concept of Silence by John Cage, the piece I am sitting in a room by Alvin Lucier and the graduation commencement speech This is water by David Foster Wallace and together with students practice listening while reserving judgement.
Oliver Kruse, Professor of Perception and Design Theory at the Peter Behrens School of Arts already initiated workshops and presentations on the topic of attentiveness and concentration as part of the Intra Muros week last year. This year he shares responsibility for the program with graduate designer Nicola Richter.

The Self and the Other

Regine Halter invited me to give the 2-day seminar The Self and the Other on March 30th and 31st at the Academy of Art and Design in Basel for their Conceptional Design Masterstudio students.
Have the great pleasure of co-teaching with Ralf Neubauer.

In the two days of the seminar the students critically reflect, analyze and discuss creating an identity for a client in the broader context of corporate identity projects.



Visual Music at tanzhaus nrw

Temps d'Images closing event
January 2015

For the closing event of the Temps d'Images festival I have been invited to present works of my students on January 10th at tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf.
The tanzhaus nrw is also showing the live performance Olympia by Orson Hentschel, student in the Music and Media program at the Institute Of Music And Media. Olympia was created as a final project in the specialisation module Visual Music, supervised by Andreas Kolinski and me.

Afterwards there will be a party in the tanzhaus nrw foyer, with live visuals from Tim Fehske, assistant professor for Visual Music Technology/Production, to music by Christian S (Cómeme), assistant professor for Visual Composition / Graphic Design.

Interfaces as a hinge and interpretation

Prof. Dr. Swantje Lichtenstein invited Dr. Johanna Dombois and me to place a discussion along the boundaries of literature, theory and art at the very last event of the LCD - Literature Club Duesseldorf on June 3rd 2014 at 8.30 p.m. in the Salon des Amateurs.

The event itself is an area of experimentation and performance. At the same time the subject Interfaces is open for new paths and opportunities. There is a cut which represents the end of LCD, there are sections, which divide a topic, breaks, which need to be done etc. It is in any case a wild, colorful, lively endeavor.

Visualizing Music

Been invited to give my workshop Visualising Music and work as a mentor for the 50+ students at the European Academy of Music and Arts Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy from September 21th until 27th, 2013.

The aim of the European Academy of Music and Arts is to provide a stimulating environment where young and talented artists and musicians from the world over can work together. To this end the Academy hosts master classes with internationally acclaimed teachers, organizes interdisciplinary projects, offers scholarship residencies, and conducts congresses. Increasingly the Academy is being used by Italian cultural institutions in Tuscany and its facilities are now available for the use of any other artistic or musical project.

The summer academy, called the College for Music and Art Montepulciano, is organized by Dr. Sybille Fraquelli at the Academy for Music and Dance Cologne and this year's annual motto is Displacement of Time.

Been invited to give my talk Motion design as a cooperative strategy of communication as part of the annual Highlights at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy on 8 May 2013. As part of the talk I also show a compilation of the best works from the last two terms by students from the Motion Design program and three experimental clips from the Visual Music workshop which Prof. Matthias Raue and I run twice a year.

Been charing the Motion Design major with Prof. Manfred Becker since 1998. This program is unique to German Film Schools.

The Inside The Machine workshop with Victor Morales (Caracas/Berlin) will be held on 17 November, from 12 noon until 5 pm. At 8 pm, Victor Morales will be showing his video game lecture, The Blurry Line And Other Divagations.

Listening with eyes, seeing with ears

Three performing arts institutions – O Espaco do tempo, Theatre des Bernardines and tanzhaus nrw – are cooperating in 2012 under the title TRYANGLE – Performing Arts Research Laboratories to develop three multidisciplinary experimental laboratories, each with 20 selected artists in various disciplines, with the support of the EU.

Tanzhaus nrw invited me for 24 and 25 July 2012 as a zap visitor. During the day, I will supervise the projects of the international artists with observation and feedback. On 25 July, at 6 pm, I will speak about Visual Music in my keynote presentation Listening with eyes, seeing with ears.

Under the motto, Hear with your eyes, see with your ears!, Thomas Leander, professor for piano at the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media, and me offer an examination of selected pictures from the current exhibition, Fresh Widow. Images of Windows since Matisse and Duchamp.

For the third time I have the great pleasure of co-hosting the one-week-workshop Self/Portrait with Ralf Neubauer at HyperWerk from September 26th until 30th. HyperWerk is one of the institutes of the Academy of Art and Design in Basel. The students at HyperWerk are trained in complex process design to initiate and shape the social changes of the future.
During the workshop the two dozen freshman students are working in groups of two and consider perception of the self vs perception of the other. They present their artistic statements in Friday's exhibition.

Daniel Späti invited me to give a talk on the relationship between sound and images on 12 September 2011 in the Design department of Zurich University of the Arts as part of his Image vs. Sound class. In my talk, I use many examples from experimental film, music videos and motion graphics to argue that the highest quality in audiovisual productions is only achieved if sound and motion graphics designers work together in constant communication and balance. Micky Remann invited me to participate in this year's VisualLiszt Award jury alongside Dr. Nick Lambert, Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto, Julia Lucas M.A. and Eno Henze. This independent panel will decide about the winners of the VisuaLiszt and Fulldome-Awards in the 2011 FullDome-Festival.

From the festival's website: "The 5th FullDome-Festival will give insights into the world of immersive fulldome projections and map current developments in this young medium. Initially featuring mostly student productions, the festival soon evolved into a meeting place for the international fulldome-scene. Prof. Birgit Gurtner invited me to give a talk on December 5th 2010 at the University of Applied Sciences' MultiMediaArt department.
The MultiMediaArt Bachelor and Master programs focus on giving the students an overall qualifaction in different media disciplines. After a basic multimedia education students specialize in either audio, film/tv, mediadesign or computer animation.

In the lecture I present the Visual Music Archive. In the course of my sabbatical research semester, I produced an online archive for my teaching field of Visual Music. For the first time, it is now possible to find all relevant information on this genre online. I explain what is meant by the term Visual Music and how the online archive can be used for this art category and beyond.

Professor Alice Chi invited me to give a talk on the relationship between the audio and the visual at the Pforzheim University on December 3rd, 2010. My talk is part of the Audio/Visual: The image becomes a composition event. It is hosted by their School of Design.

To allow people to experience the relationship between the audio and the visual directly with their own senses, the presentation is followed by the 10-channel electronic composition Bonner Durchmusterung by composer Marcus Schmickler of Cologne. As well as Schmickler, Prof. Dr. Alberto de Campo (sonification) of the Berlin University of the Arts and the artist Carsten Goertz/ farn (visualization) were also involved in realisation of the work.

The workshop is hosted by one of their institutes called HyperWerk. At HyperWerk the students are trained in complex process design to initiate and shape the social changes of the future.
Have the repeated pleasure of co-teaching with Ralf Neubauer. We changed the concept of last year's workshop slightly. This time the 25 students are working in groups of two and consider perception of the self vs perception of the other. They present their artistic statements in Friday's exhibition.
As Ralf put it so elegantly, running this seminar feels more like a privilege than work.

On 10 June 2010 at 17h00, I present the Visual Music Archive at the Institute For Music And Media (Room A 2.24). In the course of my sabbatical research semester, I produced an online archive for my teaching field of Visual Music. For the first time, it is now possible to find all relevant information on this genre online.

We are talking about the three best album or CD covers - the favourites of the students and ours. And, the students are visualizing one song in a square format. Obstructions: Choose three paper clips (with closed eyes), use them for your cover and work without computers. The only option is a b/w xerox machine. For the typography: Letraset, stamps and handwriting.

Plus, each of the students picked a song – to be visualized in a square format:
For the design they chose three paper clips (blindfolded) and had to work without computers. The only option was a b/w xerox machine. For the typography the students could choose between Letraset, stamps and their own handwriting.

Composer Prof. Matthias Raue (Gutleut Studios) and I hosted a 5-days-workshop from February 2nd until 6th, 2009 at Baden-Württemberg Film Academy. Motion Design students teamed up with one Film Music/Sound Design student each, to produce a short Visual Music clip - sounds and visuals. The only obstruction: Both students were supposed to work in the same room for the whole time.
This intense work scenario generates a creative and constructive debate about the other's profession.

ADC's mission is to increase and appreciate Germany's creative force, as well as to recognize outstanding and creative work in economic communication, and, to support creative young talents. Each year, ADC invites all creative works published within the past year into the contest. Prices will be awarded in 46 categories covering the full range of communication. Juries consisting of ADC members will judge all admissions under the ADC standard criteria of originality, clarity, persuasiveness, craft and gratification.

Served as a jury member for the German Lead Magazine Award. This was the year of the brand new high profile economy magazine ECONY. Cologne design studio Meiré &Meiré hired Chris Rehberger to design it. During the jury sessions I got very upset and finally frustrated because the majority could not be convinced to give that year's award to the exceptional design approach of ECONY. What a mistake.
